From what i understand, realsense is developed from scratch to work with short distance while you have to be at a distance with kinect for it to work. It already does on XBox. I assume that it’s a matter of cost and market demand. Kinect isn’t exactly cheap or small enough for most devices so perhaps MS feels that the demand isn’t high enough to allocate the resources needed to make Windows Hello work with Kinect and other APIs.
